Satellite-Based Meteorological and Agricultural Drought Monitoring for Agricultural Sustainability in Sri Lanka

For Sri Lanka, as an agricultural country, a methodical drought monitoring mechanism, including spatial and temporal variations, may significantly contribute to its sustainability. Investigating long-term meteorological occurrences in Lanka assessing hazard at the district level are main objectives of study. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Rainfall Anomaly (RAI), Vegetation Health (VHI) were used indicators investigate distribution agriculture droughts. Climate Hazards Group Infrared with Stations (CHIRPS) data from 1989 2019 was calculate SPI RAI. MOD13A1 MOD11A2 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 2001 2019, generate Condition (VCI) Temperature (TCI). Agricultural done using VHI generated integration VCI TCI. Thus, various analysis techniques extensively employed for vector raster analysis. A methodology has been developed declaration country VHI-derived area percentage. Accordingly, particular year, if country-wide annual extreme severe percentage based on classes is ≥30%, it can be declared year. Moreover, administrative districts classified into four classes, No drought, Low High natural-beak classification scheme both The findings this study effectively by relevant decision-makers risk management (DRM), resilience, sustainable agriculture, policymaking.
